The Publics Petition dated 11-11-1839 started the institution of Madras University. It was in January 1840 with Mr. George Norton as its President, The University Board was established. University is providing teaching and Research programmes in four Campuses of Madras University. The 68 University Department of study and Research are disseminate above in four Campuses coordinated into eighteen Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialization, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes.
Madras University is the mother of almost all the former Universities of Southern India. The University field of Jurisdiction has been held to, however, three territories of TamilNadu in recent years. The University has been recognized by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the 5 star rating first and latter with an A rating. The UGC has accredited the University as one of the centre for potential of excellence in the nation.
