The Institute developed out of the Palit Research Laboratory in Physics of the University of Calcutta (CU). Professor M N Saha came back from Allahabad in 1938 to follow Prof D M Bose in the Palit Chair of Physics. The Library was establish in 1950 with a meager budget of a few thousand rupees and a large contribution of books and periodicals from Profs M N Saha, P C Mohanty, P N Ghosh, N N Das Gupta, A K Saha, S K Ghosh and others. Indian Science News Association, Indian Association for the development of Science and the National Institutes of Science in India made empowers of periodicals. On-line accession to journals is available to the establish members only. Journal sharing service lives amongst a few Libraries in Kolkata. The Library extends its reading room service to the outsiders on appropriate.
