NIT Silchar, an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act was established in 1967 as territorial Engineering College, Silchar. In year 2002, it was raised to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College. It is located on a sprawling campus spread over six hundred acres of land on the suburban area of Silchar among breathtaking scenery. It is protected by lovely lakes and hillocks. In 2002, the institute was allowed the status of Deemed University and was named as National Institute of Technology, Silchar.
