NIOT Chennai

Introduction
The National Institute of sea Technology Chennai will test an indigenously built deep-sea mining equipment in April at a never before attempted depth of 1,100 meters. Our surveys have shown that the area has tremendous potential. The test in April will be done when the vessel Sagar Nidhi, the only one capable of hosting the equipment in the country, returns from the Antarctic excursion,” he added. The ministry has taken on lease 75,000 sq km in the Indian Ocean from the International Sea Level Authority which controls the seas that do not come under national boundaries. Finally the equipment will be used for mining the Indian Ocean seabed at a depth of up to 6,000 meters for rare minerals including magnesium as part of a project with an initial outlay of Rs 150 crore. It is rich in minerals such as magnesium tubercles, and at a conservative estimate, the total worth of the minerals could be in the region of billion,” said Shailesh Nayak, secretary, union ministry of earth sciences.
