NCBS Bangalore
Introduction
The National Center for Biological Sciences is a wing of the Tata Institute of central Research. Professor S Ramaseshan, the director of IISC, in 1982 aimed the idea of collaboration between TIFR and Iisc for starting a biological center, which would be settled in the Iisc campus. It was decided that the center would be an fence sitter unit under the guidance of TIFR.
The idea did not bear any fruit, but in 1984 the Planning Commission, authorities of India decided to allow for funds for a center for biological studies at Bangalore. Today, the NCBS has become a prime research institute in the field of biology, which uses computational and experimental approaches. The center was supposed to deal with almost all aspects of biology viz cell biology, development of animals and plants, brain explore, behavior, ecology and theoretical biology.
