It was founded in 1857 sequent upon “Wood’s Education Dispatch”, and it is one among the first 3 Universities in India. As a continuation to the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the University has been shifted from “University of Bombay” to “University of Mumbai”, vide notice published by the Government of Maharashtra and printed in the Government Gazette dated 4th September, 1996
