Forest Research Institute Coimbatore
The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) is a national Institute founded in April 1988 under the Indian Council of Forestry Research (ICFR). The Forest College and Research Institute (FC & RI) is situated at Mettupalayam in the sylvan environment of Jakanari Reserved Forest, about forty km north of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).
The main aim of the Institute is to take experiment on all features of genetic improvement and the generation of forest species. Conventional research conveyed by the Genetics and Biotechnology parts is confirmed by Silviculture, Seed technology, Protection (Entomology & Pathology), Agro-forestry and Bio-diversity parts. It also takes research in eco-restoration of Western Ghats, mangrove forests of the west and east coasts and preservation of the genetic variety of the tropical evergreen forests.
