Hiramic Legend of the Third Degree
Hiramic Legend of the Third Degree
The Hiramic Legend is the heart of the third degree ritual. Hiram Abif is one of the brightest characters entered in the annals of Company, and his story is held up as the polishing example for all Masons to emulate. Being the principal actor in the drama of the ritual, he may fairly be anticipated to make a ceremonial entrance from the wings. Masonic scholars have tried to trace the origin of the Hiramic Legend, and come upon when and why it was commenced in our ritual. That this latter supposition is not a modern one is proved by a sentence in one of the oldest Jewish writings in which we read that “all workmen were killed that they should not build another Temple devoted to idolatry, Hiram himself being determined to heaven like Enoch.” This is doubtless only a rabbinic legend but it proves that, even to the Jews of ancient times, there had descended a tradition of the Grand Master’s death.
