Introduction:
The Department of Physics was founded in as one of the five departments of the early Ernakulam center of the Kerala University. The Cochin University basic philosophy and aims find eloquent expression in its Coat of Arms emblazoning the motto ‘Tejaswinavadhitamastu’ which in essence means ‘may learning illumine us both’ the teacher and the taught .

Department of Applied Chemistry
The Department of Applied Chemistry was based in 1976 with the approval of University Grants Commission to aid in the development of the industrial belt in the Greater Cochin area by providing scientific support and aimed personnel to the existing industries. The Department has also served as a nucleus for starting the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology and the Department of Biotechnology by starting B.Tech and M.Sc courses in the several fields.
