CIWTC Kolkata
Introduction:
Central Inland Water Corporation Limited (CIWTC LTD) was incorporated in May as a Govt. of India contracting after taking over the business from a loss making erstwhile sterling company, namely River Steam Navigation & Co. (RSN & Co.). The sole objective of organization of this Corporation is to develop IWT mode of transport and repairing the same to its rightful place in the overall transport system of the country.
The Corporation is the premier and the biggest IWT operator in the coordinated sector. A WHIFF of fresh air appears to be sweeping through the corridors of the ailing Central Inland Water Transport Corporation (CIWTC), the public sector river transport company under the administrative control of the Shipping Ministry. The Government of India intends to conduct a study on the viability of disinvestment in Central Inland Water Transport Corporation Limited at different levels of employees’ strength.
The Government of India has approved a revival package for Central Inland Water Transport Corporation (CIWTC), Kolkata. CIWTC will enter into a back to back arrangement with road transport agencies and examine the feasibility for such an arrangement with rail transport so as to facilitate user agencies like Steel Authority of India Ltd. and Food Corporation of India getting a ‘one stop’ service. It will also roll back the age of retirement on superannuation to years from the existing years.
